In the pursuit of biophilic interior design, what does Earth Day mean from a plant enthusiasts perspective?

Earth Day thoughts with a plant loving, traveling soul. Bobbie Brown shares her take on biophilic interior design in a modern world.

With Earth Day tomorrow, it is a day to celebrate and bring awareness to our ever-changing landscapes. There are so many changes we can make in our everyday lives to affect our earth positively, but it is inevitable that development will continue. Therefore, change also needs to take effect at the source, within our built environments. We have a sense of responsibility as an Interior Designer through sustainable and biophilic design to increase the connection between the occupants with the natural world.

However, to truly achieve biophilic design, the struggle is real for interior designers everywhere.  “Biophilic Design is something I have been pursuing throughout my career, how it connects to the modern world and how humankind experiences new spaces,” says Bobbie Brown, Senior Designer at One Line Design Studio. “The investment it takes to attain and maintain biophilic design, like live green walls, water features, use of natural light, and curves in architecture is often value engineered.” – she adds.

“Biophilic designs are innovative ways of incorporating nature into buildings and modern architecture. Biophilia means the human tendency to interact or be closely associated with other forms of life in nature.” – 6 Principles of Biophilic Design

Bobbie takes in the joys of nature with her plant babies and her fur baby.

My dream is that the principles of biophilic design become second nature to the design process; pun intended. I continue to try and push the envelope through informing clients on realistic budget expectations and implementation within their projects.

In my personal life, being a self-proclaimed plant mama helps fill the void of nature in my interior spaces.  Living in Florida’s tropical environment makes it easy to keep everything green, you cannot really ‘mess it up’. The real plant queens are the ones that can keep a house full of tropical plants thriving while living in a cold environment. I do not plan to live somewhere cold again if I can help it, growing up in Wyoming was enough!

Another way to positively impact our earth and something that is particularly important to Bobbie, is her vegan lifestyle and eating a plant-based diet. I have been ‘plant based’ since 2017, and while it was a drastic change, it was one of the best decisions for me. The irony is that I grew up in Wyoming with a hunting and fishing family and my dad even does taxidermy as a side business. However, I do it for the earth, the animals, and my health; and I am passionate about sharing my story, especially if it can inspire others to make a change as well.

Lastly, I have a gypsy soul, and strong desire to discover and experience. I have lived and worked in two countries, five states, and ten different cities. Each move was somehow related to me pursuing interior design. In reflection, I love the whole idea of starting and finishing a chapter in different locations and how traveling has shaped me as a Designer. Biophilic design can be seen everywhere if you look close enough, and we can really learn a lot from diverse cultures, and how we each value nature uniquely.

In the end, this may be one of my most favorite pictures with my plant babies (and fur baby) and on Earth Day, I hope you pause and take a moment to appreciate and enjoy nature.
